Free credit reports coming

As a result of new federal legislation, Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (P.L. 108-159), consumers will be able to request one free copy of their credit report each year.  Credit reports can be obtained by calling a toll free number, making a request by mail, or using the new web site AnnualCreditReport.com.  The web site will be available starting on Dec. 1.  A story on MSNBC, "Free credit report details announced," explains the process.  Due to the anticipated frenzy, the free credit reports will be released to the country in stages, starting with the West Coast of the U.S., on Dec. 1, 2004. States in the Midwest will be able to obtain the reports in March, the South in June and the East coast states in Sept. 2005.

The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration. There are some who believe the Senate will not take action.

Are you being induced?

Congress has introduced a controversial law (S. 2560), known as the Inducing Infringement of Copyrights Act (IICA). This law, formerly called the Induce Act, plans to thwart attempts to infringe upon copyrights, particularly with technology that allows filesharing. Herein lies the controversy. To follow the developments of this law see Ernest Miller's posts at The Importance of ... and The LawMeme Reader's Guide to Ernie Miller's Guide to the INDUCE Act. For more commentary see Kevin Heller's Induce Act blog and a good background article "INDUCING Bad Law."
